join other utah birders in the field
The American White Pelican is one of the most iconic bird species in Utah and Great Salt Lake is home to one of the largest breeding colonies of pelicans. On this trip, join the Utah Birders and biologists from the Utah Department of Wildlife Resources to learn about these unique birds and the PELI Project, while we look for banded pelicans before they begin their migration south. Our sightings will be included in research being conducted by the Utah Division of Wildlife and Westminster College.
The trip will kick off with a short presentation on the PELI project to talk about what we will be looking for. Then we’ll start scanning the playas for pelicans and learning some interesting facts about these enormous fish eating birds that nest on the shores of a lake with no fish in it!
Along with searching for pelicans we’ll encounter a variety of migrant waterbirds stopping over and staging on the Willard Spur that might include: Great Egret, Long-billed Dowitcher, Marbled Godwit, Greater Yellowlegs, Common Tern, Forster’s Tern, a variety of ducks! As the morning progresses we will bird our way around Willard Bay before calling it a day!
